A Columbo Day special by Centipede. Columbus, Columbo– it’s all Calabria to me, or Campania, maybe Lake Como, once in a while even San Cono. (Shout out to Joe at Caffe Capri on Graham Avenue: what’s good & a double espresso to go please, grazie.) Here it was almost an 18th Avenue nervous breakdown since I was late & there was Angry M.F. Fisher on the other side, chomping on a marzipan clam (or maybe it was a mussel) from Villabate but more importantly, with a much needed cappucino for me too. Thankfully, with a cry of Solidarity!!– I’m with the Newspaper Guild– the good men of Carpenter’s Local 926 paused in their inexorable march towards fair wages & worker safety. That we take opposite positions on the Atlantic Yards issue was of small consequence; we’ve talked about it at their office on Commerce Street in Red Hook & agreed that, however this mess plays out, union labor
deserves in. Today, however– today was for celebration with the kids of Vince Lombardi Elementary School (aka P.S. 204), Fort Hamilton High School & Our Lady of Guadalupe among the many in attendance. Were there marching bands? Hell yeah, there were marching bands… To be continued.
