crime pays

We talked of the neighborhood from which we had both come, and we talked of baseball season and of how the Giants would miss Monte Irwin, and of Don Newcombe, the big Dodger pitcher who had been called to the army. Sutton was a knowledgeable baseball fan and an unregenerate Dodger rooter.

“I don’t see how the Dodgers can do it without Newcombe,” he said sadly. “You know when he’s right I never saw a pitcher tougher on right-handed batters. That low curve drops away from the right-handed batter and makes it impossible for the hitter to pull the ball. He’s lucky if can slice one to right field.”
